If you’ve been in the makeup game for a while, you’ve heard about Hakuhodo brushes and japanese brushes in general. To me, Hakuhodo represents the ultimate quality in the makeup brushes industry. I know, there are quite a few luxury makeup brushes japanese brands out there, but Hakuhodo is one of the most popular and easier to get your hands on actually.
A few words about the company:
Hakuhodo is one of the leading makeup brush manufacturers in Kumano, producing 500,000 brushes monthly.
It also has been producing and providing high quality makeup brushes for many leading cosmetic companies and makeup artist brands worldwide as an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) supplier. Through these collaborations, we continue to make the ultimate fude, the perfect tool.
We never cut the tip of the brushes but hand-sculpt and assemble them using the finest quality materials. We use the term fude for our makeup brushes, which means brush in Japanese, because our makeup fudes (brushes) are different from other brushes, whose tips are cut.
I thought I know what a soft brush feels like. Guess I was wrong.
That’s how you get your brushes (see the photo above). Cute white packaging with the logo printed on it.
I went for some eye makeup brushes for my first order. Hakuhodo brushes are fairly expensive. So instead of getting one or two face brushes (which I am planning to get later), I ordered 4 essential eye makeup brushes.
They also include some instructions on how to take care of your brushes:
My first thought when I opened the packaging was “Wow, these are some very well made brushes“. They scream luxury.
The handles and the ferrules are absolutely flawless.
The variety of brushes on the Hakuhodo’s website is vast. I tried to choose brushes that are gonna fulfill all my needs when I do my eye makeup. I think I did good, because since I got them I don’t use any other brushes at all.
Hakuhodo B004 – This is your basic makeup brush. Made of goat hair. Extremely soft. Great to apply your brow bone highlight and all over the lid color. It picks up the product so well, that I never have to dip it twice into an eyeshadow. Price: $20
Hakuhodo G5548 – A pencil brush made of blue squirrel & horse hair. I use it to smudge my eyeliner, to apply eyeshadows on my lower lid, for my inner corner highlight and to define my crease. Brushes from the G series can be used with water-based products. Price: $28
Hakuhodo J5523 – Fluffy blending brush made of goat hair. This brush is known for being a dupe of the MAC 217 brush. I don’t own that one, but those who do have confirmed that the Hakuhodo version wins the battle cause of the superior quality. And as a bonus it is cheaper – $19. I use it for so many things: blending the crease, adding depth to my crease, creating the cat eye shape, blending the lower lid color…
Hakuhodo S142 – I love this brush. It is another blending brush made of blue squirrel hair. Blue squirel hair doesn’t have enough resilience to blend really dark and deep colors. I use it to diffuse the color. You get that perfect gradient when using the S142. Also, it applies all kind of loose eyeshadows very well. Highly recommend this one. Price – $28
I have washed these brushes quite a few times. They didn’t change their shape. Didn’t shed. I didn’t have to use a brush guard on the J5523 as with all of my other fluffy brushes.
With these brushes my eye makeup application time is cut in half. Really. It just became so stress free and effortless.
I did have some concerns about the writing coming off the brushes. And I was surprised because I had them only for 2 weeks. So I contacted them just out of curiosity, why would this happen. They replied back. And the reason would be: they do not use protective coating for safety reason. I was suggested to use clear nail polish or tape or anything else to prevent fading… But unfortunately it is a little too late :)
So, keep this in mind when you order Hakuhodo brushes.
My overall thoughts: Yes, these brushes are expensive. Are they a must have? Of course not. But if you like makeup, and you use makeup on a daily basis, you will not only feel but you will see the difference. Also, Hakuhodo brushes are a good investment. They are gonna last you for years and years.
Also, it is worth mentioning the exceptional Hakuhodo customer service! You place your order and in no time it is already processed and shipped.
